The meeting commenced with a passionate address by the Director of Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development (DAHLD) Dr. Chulu, emphasizing the collective responsibility in combating rabies. The Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) together with other stakeholders deliberated on critical aspects of the strategy, seeking to address gaps and enhance its efficacy in light of evolving challenges.

One of the outcomes of the meeting was the integration of global economic concepts into the strategy, tailored to Malawi’s unique epidemiological landscape. The LSPCA together with other stakeholders identified and incorporated crucial components which were previously absent in the strategy.

A consensus emerged regarding the need to improve the reporting and surveillance of human rabies cases, focusing on the need for a standardized, One Health approach to data collection. It was highlighted that the DAHLD would serve as the central repository for rabies-related data, streamlining information dissemination and analysis.

The National Rabies Strategy Meeting epitomized a unified commitment to combat rabies and safeguard both human and animal populations in Malawi. With tangible strategies and a renewed sense of urgency, stakeholders departed with a shared vision of eliminating human death by 2030 while advancing towards a rabies-free future. As the final draft of the strategy awaits submission to the Ministry of Health, scheduled for May 2024, Malawi stands firm on its journey towards a safer and healthier nation.

Stakeholders collaborate to enhance the welfare of working dogs https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/stakeholders-collaborate-to-enhance-the-welfare-of-working-dogs/ https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/stakeholders-collaborate-to-enhance-the-welfare-of-working-dogs/#respond Sat, 09 Mar 2024 20:44:00 +0000 https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/?p=3844 In response to the growing public concerns regarding poor welfare and handling of security dogs in Lilongwe City, the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) has partnered with the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) and the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development (DAHLD) to implement a collaborative project.

The project aims to provide trainings for shelter managers and dog handlers from various companies and institutions in aspects of dog care, welfare, and handling, as well as providing regular health surveillance and veterinary care. Upon the project’s completion at the end of this year, government-accredited stamps of approval will be awarded to companies adhering to the animal welfare standards outlined in the Malawi Animal Welfare Guidelines of 2019.

On January 31st, 2024, the LSPCA collaborated with the DAHLD to engage with security companies and institutions in Lilongwe to discuss the raised concerns on welfare and handling of security dogs. These concerns include poor shelter, nutrition, and health conditions observed at various places where security dogs are kept. They also include concerns that security dogs are stationed with guards or handlers in the sun for extended periods without water, food, and appropriate restraining materials (which has resulted in recent surges in fatal dog attacks on innocent humans). Among the stakeholders were the Lilongwe City Council, the Malawi Police Service and 20 security companies within Lilongwe City.

The security companies agreed to be part of the project and address the discussed welfare issues, including the overlooked animal welfare practices such as observing recommended maximum working hours, retirement age, and preventative veterinary care. In addition, the security companies agreed to work with the LSPCA and DAHLD to enhance the handling techniques of dog handlers by providing further training in dog handling and ensure the availability of proper restraining materials for dogs on duty, for public safety purposes.

LSPCA Celebrates World Animal Day with Animal Kindness Club School Children https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/lspca-celebrates-world-animal-day-with-animal-kindness-club-school-children/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 14:54:00 +0000 https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/?p=2449

In celebration of this year’s World Animal Day on 4th October, LSPCA joined hands with an enthusiastic group of school children from Biwi primary school in Lilongwe. The day was filled with exciting activities focused on promoting awareness and compassion towards animals. The event featured engaging art sessions, fun animal games, and an enlightening animal kindness lecture, all aimed at nurturing a culture of empathy and respect for our furry, feathered, and finned friends.

The event kicked off with an inspiring art session that encouraged children to unleash their creativity while focusing on animal welfare themes. Armed with pencils and crayons, the young artists passionately expressed their love for animals through colourful and heartfelt artwork. Themes ranged from wildlife conservation to responsible pet ownership, illustrating the children’s deep understanding of the importance of treating animals with kindness and care.

Following the art session, the children engaged in a series of fun animal games designed to educate them about different species, their habitats, and the importance of conservation. Games like “Animal Charades” and “Animal Trivia” brought out both laughter and knowledge, showcasing the power of playful learning. Through these games, the children gained a better understanding of the diverse world of animals and the need to protect and respect them.

A highlight of the event was an insightful animal kindness lecture delivered by a representative of the animal welfare organization. The lecture focused on instilling empathy and fostering a sense of responsibility towards animals. It covered topics such as proper animal care, understanding animal behaviour, and the significance of adoption and spaying/neutering. The engaging lecture left a lasting impression on the children, motivating them to become advocates for animal welfare within their communities.

LSPCA celebrates World Animal Day https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/lspca-celebrates-world-animal-day/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 09:06:00 +0000 https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/?p=2809 On 4 October, World Animal Day, eighty-six animals in Lilongwe have received free veterinary services courtesy of the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care for Animals (LSPCA) as part of World Animal Day celebrations.

World Animal Day is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about improving the welfare standards of animals across the globe. The day is a reminder of how animals enhance our lives and focuses on creating awareness about the effects of how we treat those that do not have a voice.

During the celebrations held in Chinsapo in Lilongwe on Tuesday, the LSPCA, winner of the 2022 World Animal Day Grant also sensitized animal owners about responsible animal ownership.

Stand up for animals who can’t speak for themselves. They need to be cared for, loved, and protected from cruelty, not just for world animal day but every day.

Senior group village headman Msewa Kakule hailed the LSPCA for the free veterinary support and knowledge shared, saying it will improve animals’ health and people’s attitude towards animals.

LSPCA attends the 7th Africa Animal Welfare Conference (AAWC) in Kigali, Rwanda https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/lspca-attends-the-7th-africa-animal-welfare-conference-aawc-in-kigali-rwanda/ Fri, 29 Sep 2023 08:07:00 +0000 https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/?p=2787

In a global climate where the welfare of animals, the preservation of our environment, and the fight against climate change are increasingly interlinked, the 7th Africa Animal Welfare Conference (AAWC) proved to be a pivotal gathering of minds and hearts dedicated to these causes. The Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) Programs Director, Dr. Madeline Nyamwanza, had the privilege of attending this transformative event in Kigali, Rwanda, from September 25th to 27th, 2023. The trip was made possible with the generous financial support of the WTG-Germany.

The theme of the conference, ” Navigating the delicate balance of animal welfare, climate change and development: concerted actions towards a healthy and sustainable environment,” highlighted the intricate relationship between these three aspects. It was a call to action, emphasizing the urgent need for collective efforts to protect the welfare of animals, mitigate the effects of climate change, and promote sustainable development. In a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges, the conference provided a platform for experts, researchers, and advocates to share knowledge and collaborate on innovative solutions.

The event featured a wide array of sessions, workshops, and panel discussion. Among the topics addressed were animal welfare in disaster scenarios, sustainable animal agriculture, wildlife conservation, and the profound impacts of climate change on the animal kingdom. These discussions shed light on the challenges and opportunities within each area and highlighted the importance of working together to overcome them.

Dr. Madeline Nyamwanza actively engaged with the conference’s vibrant atmosphere. She participated in panel discussions, shared insights, and networked with a diverse group of professionals from various backgrounds. The experience was not only enlightening but also deeply inspiring, as it reinforced the critical role that individuals and organizations play in shaping a more compassionate and sustainable future.

The AAWC acted as a pivotal catalyst for change. It provided a unique opportunity to foster collaboration, strengthen existing relationships, share vital knowledge, and mobilize efforts to enhance the lives of animals, people, and the environment. The three-day event was a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of raising awareness about the crucial issues facing our planet today.

LSPCA’s attendance at the conference would not have been possible without the generous support of the WTG organization. Their commitment to promoting the welfare of animals and environmental sustainability is commendable, and their sponsorship made a significant impact in ensuring that our Programs Director could be a part of this transformative event.

From the farm to the market: safe way to transport live chickens https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/from-the-farm-to-the-market-safe-way-to-transport-live-chickens/ Thu, 20 Apr 2023 08:31:00 +0000 https://all.profilingwomenmw.org/?p=2802 Have you noticed how chickens are transported in your area? Many chicken vendors in Malawi transport their chickens upside down-tied on the handles of their bicycles. This can lead to injuries, stress and poor welfare for these animals.

The LSPCA has stepped up to support chicken vendors in improving the transportation and welfare of their chickens. The organization has distributed custom-made chicken baskets to vendors in and around Lilongwe. By providing chicken baskets to these vendors, LSPCA not only is helping to improve the living conditions of the animals, but also ensuring that they arrive at their destination safely. The use of these chicken baskets reduces stress on the birds during transit, which can help maintain meat quality and reduce mortality rates.

LSPCA recognize that many small-scale chicken vendors lack access to proper equipment for transporting chickens, which can lead to injuries and even death. Moreover, supporting chicken vendors helps improve local economies by empowering those who rely on selling poultry as a source of income. By working with these vendors, LSPCA is making a direct impact on communities while promoting animal welfare.

Therefore, it’s crucial that all those involved in the transportation of live animals make conscious efforts towards their well-being. By supporting initiatives such as distributing chicken baskets and educating individuals on proper animal handling techniques, we can create a more ethical and sustainable world for all living beings.
